An academic department’s clinical and basic science investigator reputations are one clear indicator of strength in research. Fiscal year federal and industry dollars to conduct research are another. In early March, UNC Anesthesiology’s renown as a major hub of wide-ranging, federally funded research was reinforced by the release of the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research (BRIMR)’s annual report of institutional rankings for FY 2024 NIH funding<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

UNC Department of Anesthesiology is thrilled to share that the department ranked 15th<\/sup> ($5.99M) <\/b>in NIH funding in FY2024 among all U.S. anesthesiology departments<\/strong>.\u00a0 This rankings strength is bolstered by the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine being ranked 19th ($343M) <\/strong>for NIH funding among major academic medical centers nationwide.<\/p>\n

As an authoritative source that tallies year-end composite NIH funding data, the BRIMR is respected by accomplished clinical and basic science researchers nationwide who are the cornerstones of a department’s reputation in research. Among 363 NIH-funded anesthesiologists in the U.S., two of the department’s basic science faculty were ranked in the top 60. UNC Anesthesiology Vice Chair for Research and Professor of Anesthesiology Matthew Mauck, PhD,<\/b> was ranked 2nd<\/sup><\/b> ($4.7M)<\/b>\u00a0and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Sarah Linnstaedt, PhD, <\/b>ranked\u00a055th ($1.2M) <\/b>in NIH funding for FY 2024.<\/p>\n
