{"id":21688,"date":"2025-05-01T10:31:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T14:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/?p=21688"},"modified":"2025-05-28T17:20:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T21:20:10","slug":"dr-samuel-blacker-named-neuroanesthesia-section-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/dr-samuel-blacker-named-neuroanesthesia-section-director\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Samuel Blacker Named Neuroanesthesia Section Director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNC Anesthesiology has named Associate Professor of Anesthesiology <strong>Samuel Blacker, MD<\/strong>, as <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">the department&#8217;s new Neuroanesthesia Section <\/span><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Director<\/span><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">, effective May 1, 2025.\u00a0 As the department&#8217;s long-time Anesthesiology Support Services Medical Director, Dr. Blacker<span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"> mentors and leads education and professional development of anesthesia support personnel.<\/span><\/span><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9746\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2018\/07\/BlackerSamuelWebsite.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2018\/07\/BlackerSamuelWebsite.png 160w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2018\/07\/BlackerSamuelWebsite-150x184.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/span><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"> As a leader of peri-operative protocols and policy within UNC Health, he <\/span>oversees major <span class=\"x_normaltextrun\">planning and prioritizing initiatives for allotting patient care equipment, as well as compliance with regulatory, certification and safety initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Blacker has also developed a spine enhanced recovery pathway for UNC Health patients and co-authored a comprehensive review of spine enhanced recovery \u2013 <em>Perioperative Care of Patients Undergoing Major Complex Spinal Instrumentation Surgery: Clinical Practice Guidelines From the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care &#8212; <\/em>with anesthesiologists from other academic medical centers. He played a key role in enabling North Carolina Surgical Hospital to open in September 2024 through leading planning and execution of moving UNC Health&#8217;s anesthesia services to the new surgical tower.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8771\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2015\/01\/mia-kang.jpg\" alt=\"mia kang\" width=\"149\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2015\/01\/mia-kang.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2015\/01\/mia-kang-150x202.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/>The department thanks\u00a0Professor of Anesthesiology <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><b>Mia Kang<\/b>, <strong>MD<\/strong>, for her excellence and dedication to Neuroanesthesia Section leadership as its Director since 2016. UNC Anesthesiology Chair <strong>Ted Sakai, MD, PhD, MHA, FASA<\/strong>, noted:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Blacker&#8217;s<span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"> leadership in implementing system-wide spine ERAS pathways, developing craniotomy ERAS protocols, enhancing communication in code stroke meetings, and supporting the SNACC EVD safety campaign has demonstrated his excellence and readiness to oversee the department&#8217;s Neuroanesthesia Section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kang for her outstanding leadership and contributions over the years. Her legacy will continue under Dr. Blacker&#8217;s stewardship, ensuring continued excellence in Neuroanesthesia care and innovation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p
