{"id":23720,"date":"2026-01-09T14:24:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T19:24:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/?p=23720"},"modified":"2026-03-30T07:41:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T11:41:16","slug":"dr-maryam-jowza-interviewed-fox-news-health-cardiovascular-risk-of-nsaids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/dr-maryam-jowza-interviewed-fox-news-health-cardiovascular-risk-of-nsaids\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Maryam Jowza: Sharing Pain Medicine Insights With Fox News Health on Cardiovascular Risk of NSAIDs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNC Anesthesiology is pleased to recognize UNC Division of Pain Medicine <strong>Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Maryam Jowza, MD,<\/strong> for her contributed expertise to an early January <em>Fox News Health<\/em> report on why <strong>non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/strong> have been speculated as the class of OTCs most linked to elevated cardiovascular risk.<\/p>\n<p>Among several pain medicine experts interviewed by <em>Fox News Health, <\/em>Dr. Jowza explained that while NSAIDs (eg, ibuprofen, naproxen), are widely taken as a proven class of OTCs to reduce bodily pain, fever and inflammation, when taken at higher doses and for a longer duration, they introduce an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2017\/10\/jowza-e1744056568630.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2017\/10\/jowza-e1744056568630.jpeg 187w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/anesthesiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/470\/2017\/10\/jowza-e1744056568630-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jowza noted: \u201cNSAIDs reduce production of <em>prostaglandins<\/em>, which are involved not only in inflammation, but also in other body functions. NSAIDS can influence the tone of\u00a0blood vessels, and when taken at higher doses for a longer duration, they are more likely to increase blood pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For comparison, Dr. Jowza also discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/pain-management\/painkillers\">non-NSAIDs<\/a> (eg, acetaminophen), which also achieve pain relief through reducing inflammation. By acting on the brain\u2019s pain signals instead of affecting blood vessels via targeting prostaglandin production, non-NSAIDS pose less risk for increased blood pressure. \u00a0Dr. Jowza offered similar words as others interviewed by <em>Fox News Health<\/em> for this health report &#8212; All NSAIDs should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.<\/p>\n<p>To read the
