Review of Bylaws Regarding Membership

Discussion of goals of UNC SOM AOE membership

• Size
  The current process allows Department Chairs to nominate with a very high likelihood of acceptance. The chairs have been educated well on how to nominate and this seems to be working well. Though there may be advantages to a smaller size, overall the committee seems pleased with the current membership numbers. The large size allows for networking and broader faculty development.
• Departmental Representation
  Currently these are the departments that appear not to be represented: Allied Health Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology & Immunology, Pharmacology, Nutrition (however, Dr. Chaney is listed here also), & Ophthalmology. We have the impression that Allied Health Sciences and Biomedical Engineering do not teach medical students. We will contact the other chairs to discuss how we can help them choose nominees.

• Requirements for membership
  After the renewals this year we will develop more clear expectations for participation to maintain membership.

Wednesday, December 15, 2010 – Call for nominations goes to all SOM chairs and all faculty.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 – Deadline for nominations from department chairs.

Friday, February 18, 2011 – Deadline for receiving completed applications from all nominees.

March, 2011 – Selection Committee meets to select new members and approve renewal of current members

Late March/Early April, 2011 – New members and re-appointed members are announced.

May, 2011 – Annual Evening of Educational Scholarship and induction of new members

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 – Call for nominations from department chairs.

Friday, February 17, 2012 – Deadline for receiving completed applications from all nominees.

March, 2012 – Selection Committee meets to select new members and approve renewal of current members

Discussion of leadership of process

There were no apparent volunteers to lead the process so Julie Byerley will, but others should feel free to name their interest if present. Your participation on the selection committee is appreciated.

Additionally, we discussed moving the process to the Fall, calling for members over the summer and having a banquet to kick off the year. That can be discussed for summer 2012, but we agreed we should proceed this year as expected.
