Structural racism encompasses historical and current public policies, institutional practices and cultural norms, which perpetuate racism across systems including education and health care. These structures underlie health disparities, as well as the discrimination experienced by medical students, residents and faculty. Transformative change in health professions education requires a systems thinking approach to successfully combat the structural racism deeply embedded at every level of our medical educational programs. Curricular leaders must take responsibility to correct the racism reflected in our educational materials and approaches, the bias in our scoring and evaluation systems, and microaggressions in the educational milieu.
