Save the date for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) Medical Grand Rounds “Teaching the Engagement of Compassion: Practical Evidence-Based Strategies to Use Today” with Kenneth J. Fortier, MD on Wednesday, December 18th, 8:00 – 9:00 AM in the Main Auditorium of the NHRMC (across from medical staff office).

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Summarize recent evidence that compassion in medicine: a) can be taught; b) improves clinical outcomes and patients’ quality of life; c) sustains care provider well-being reduces burnout.
2. Describe evidence-based behaviors and speech that promote the engagement and perception of compassion.
3. Develop achievable personal strategies for modeling and teaching the engagement of compassion in medicine.

Brief Description:

As today’s learners encounter our changing healthcare system, we can offer no greater abiding value to them and their patients than to model and teach the engagement of compassion, the concern for and desire to relieve the suffering of others and the perpetual heart of medicine’s very purpose and of our motivation and enduring rewards. Recent evidence indicates that it can be taught, improves clinical outcomes, sustains provider well-being, reduces burnout and can be expressed within the constraints of busy schedules. We’ll review evidence and propose achievable strategies to engage now.

Kenneth J. Fortier, MD is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mentored Member in the UNC Academy of Educators.
