SUMMARY:AOE Project ACCESS Collaborative Approach to AI-Assisted Curriculum Development
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:\nPeter G. Fuerst\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor of Biochemistry and the Programs of Distinction Faculty Director at the Atrium Health Wake Forest University School of Medicine. With over 15 years of experience in medical education\, Dr. Fuerst has held significant leadership roles\, including Associate Dean of Curriculum and Department Chair at the University of Idaho’s WWAMI Medical Education Program. His educational expertise spans course development and assessment\, having served as a Cross Campus Course Director and Site Leader for the University of Washington School of Medicine\, where he led initiatives in active learning and curriculum renewal. \n  \nIn addition to his administrative leadership\, Dr. Fuerst is an accomplished researcher and mentor. He has served as the Principal Investigator on numerous NIH and NSF grants totaling over $4.7 million\, with much of his work focusing on neurobiology and the molecular mechanisms of retinal development. His commitment to teaching excellence has been recognized with multiple honors\, including the Wake Forest School of Medicine Teacher of the Year Award (Class of 2027) and the University of Idaho Medical Education Teaching Excellence in Perpetuity Award. He remains active in professional development\, focusing on inclusive leadership\, active learning technology\, and the integration of foundational sciences into clinical practice. \n

In these roles\, she oversees medical\, nursing\, and graduate education\, as well as Geisinger’s research environment\, which includes expertise in precision health\, genomics\, informatics\, implementation science\, bioethics\, and more. \nPrior to joining Geisinger in 2022\, Dr. Byerley served as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at the UNC School of Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics. In 2021\, she also served as Interim Dean of the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. \nHer academic work focuses on educational innovation\, including expedited career pathways\, forward-looking curriculum design\, workforce development\, mentoring\, and system improvements toward higher-value health professions education. She currently serves on the AAMC Council of Deans and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). \nDr. Byerley earned her bachelor’s degree in physics and a secondary teaching certificate from Rhodes College\, after which she taught high school before attending medical school at Duke University. She completed her pediatrics residency and chief residency at UNC–Chapel Hill\, where she also earned a Master of Public Health with a focus on maternal and child health. \nA practicing pediatrician\, Dr. Byerley continues to see patients and teach medical students monthly at Geisinger Wyoming Valley. SUMMARY:AOE Project ACCESS: Advancing Competency-Based Pharmacy Education Through Implementation Science: Developing and Validating Readiness-to-Change Instruments Using the Behavior Change Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Speaker:\n \nDenise H. Rhoney\, PharmD\, FCCP\, FNCS\, MCCM\, is the Ronald and Nancy McFarlane Distinguished Professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Eshelman School of Pharmacy in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina. She also serves as Director of the Research Laboratory in Education and Learning Innovation. Dr. Rhoney earned her BS and PharmD degrees from the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy and completed residencies in general clinical pharmacy and critical care\, followed by a clinical research fellowship at UNC/Glaxo. \nDr. Rhoney began her academic and clinical career as the first pharmacist to fully integrate clinical pharmacy services into a neurocritical care team\, establishing a precedent-setting practice model at Detroit Receiving Hospital during her 17-year tenure at Wayne State University. Her scholarly work has focused on improving outcomes in neurologically critically ill patients through optimization of medication therapy. She has served as an investigator on numerous clinical trials and authored more than 110 peer-reviewed publications. \nDr. Rhoney is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS)\, and was named a Master of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. She has held national leadership roles\, including two terms on the NCS Board of Directors and Executive Committee\, and active involvement in the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Within ACCP\, she has served as Chair of the ACCP Foundation Board of Trustees\, led multiple programming and membership committees\, and currently serves as President of ACCP. \nA recognized leader in educational innovation\, Dr. Rhoney chaired the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Joint Task Force on Competency-Based Pharmacy Education and Academic Affairs Committee where the work centers around competency-based pharmacy education and is a key contributor to the national dialogue shaping pharmacy education reform. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Collaborative for Competency-Based Health Professions Education (ICBHPHE)\, and editor of a special collection of the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education on CBE. Her work has been instrumental in advancing competency-based education frameworks using implementation science and has informed both U.S. and international initiatives. She has recently been awarded as the AACP Distinguished Teaching Scholar.
