Should a member be unable to meet these requirements, their membership will be considered suspended until the member is able to complete the required number of events per year (June 1 &#8211; May 31). Additional requirements for membership will be determined by the council and voted on by membership.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Frequently Asked Questions<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Is the AOE just for medical faculty?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>No. We welcome applicants from biomedical education, too! We work to create a more inclusive and relevant environment for basic science faculty, directors, and trainees. If you have questions or feedback, please reach out to us at <a href=\"mailto:aoe@med.unc.edu\">aoe@med.unc.edu<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Do I need to be an MD or DO to apply?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><!--StartFragment --><span class=\"cf0\">The AOE is committed to supporting medical and biomedical educators across the School of Medicine. Anyone interested and involved in such education is eligible to apply.<\/span><!--EndFragment --><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Is AOE Membership only open to those located in Chapel Hill?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>No. AHEC regional campus faculty\/trainees are encouraged to apply.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>My membership was suspended due to insufficient event attendance. Do I need to reapply?<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>No. To renew membership, attest to four events attended over the following year.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Is there a requirement for applicants to wait two years before applying to the AOE?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nNo. We no longer require applicants to wait two years after their start at UNC to apply. This was a by-law amendment approved in the February 2020 elections.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Does membership expire after a certain point which would require me to reapply?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nNo. As long as a member reaches the requirement of four events per year (July 1- June 30), they remain an active member of the AOE. Those who do not meet the event requirement are suspended until four events are attended within the AOE calendar year (July 1 &#8211; June 30). This year, the AOE Evening of Scholarship will take place on June 4th, 2026, and can count towards the required events for membership.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>What happened to the Mentored Membership path?<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nAs part of a by-law amendment approved in the February 2020 elections, the AOE now offers only two paths to membership: faculty and resident\/fellow. The Mentored Member program has since evolved into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/aoe\/programming\/flagship-program\/\">AOE FLAGship (Faculty and Fellow Leadership Growth) Program<\/a> for which recruitment opens in the summer annually.
