{"id":3823,"date":"2016-01-20T15:50:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-20T20:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/med.sites.unc.edu\/aoe\/aoe\/membership\/resident-membership\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T15:23:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T19:23:35","slug":"resident-membership","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/aoe\/membership\/resident-membership\/","title":{"rendered":"Resident\/Fellow\/Trainee Membership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- portlet_header --><\/p>\n<p><!-- portlet_above --><\/p>\n<p><!-- description --><\/p>\n<p>All School of Medicine trainees (Residents, Chief Residents, Fellows, and Post-Doctoral scholars), including those at an Area Health Education Center (AHEC), are eligible to apply to the AOE.<\/p>\n<p>Attendance (virtual or in-person) at two (2) AOE events before the year applying are required.<\/p>\n<p>Criteria for selection include excellence in and commitment to teaching and a desire to remain active as a teacher in the future career.<\/p>\n<p>Resident\/fellow\/trainee membership in the AOE is terminated after training at UNC. Those who become faculty at UNC remain a part of the AOE. Individuals who return as faculty members later may contact <a href=\"mailto:aoe@med.unc.edu\">aoe@med.unc.edu<\/a> for the next steps.<\/p>\n<p>Successful applicants will need to document accomplishments in ONE or more of the following six areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Direct teaching or mentoring, including didactic or clinical teaching of medical and biomedical students, residents, fellows, graduate students, Post Docs, or other faculty<\/li>\n<li>Instructional development and curriculum design (including the development of medical\/biomedical education resources)<\/li>\n<li>Student or resident advising and mentoring<\/li>\n<li>Educational administration and leadership<\/li>\n<li>Educational research<\/li>\n<li>Continuing medical\/biomedical education resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Application Timeline<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>January 8, 2026<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Call for applications\/nominations<\/li>\n<li><b><i>April 1, 2026, 11:59 PM EST<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 Deadline for receiving completed applications from all nominees.<\/li>\n<li><em>Mid-October 2025 \u2013 <\/em>Selection Committee meets to select new members.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>Mid-April 2026<\/i><\/b>\u00a0\u2013 New members are announced.<\/li>\n<li><b><i>June 2026 &#8211;<\/i> <\/b>AOE Evening of Scholarship where new members are inducted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Application Materials<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Curriculum Vitae (CV)<\/strong> with relevant teaching and education experience highlighted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal statement (<em>limited to one single-spaced page)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0that includes the following elements:\n<ul>\n<li>Description of your interest, roles, and accomplishments in teaching<\/li>\n<li>Why you wish to be considered for membership<\/li>\n<li>How you would like to contribute to the Academy\u2019s mission<\/li>\n<li><strong>List the names of two (2) Academy of Educators events you have attended or will attend by the application deadline.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Completing the FLAGship (Fellow Leadership and Growth) or TARHEEL (Teaching As a Resident: Highlighting the Evidence and Enthusiasm of Learning) programs will automatically qualify participants for membership without the need for a full application.
