POLICY UPDATE

PLEASE NOTE: Effective March 30, 2015, UNCHCS Policy ADMIN #0041 will be revised so that Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are permitted to declare death, instead of just physicians. However, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants will only be permitted to declare death if their collaborative practice or supervisory agreement authorize them to do so. As a result, any Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant who wishes to declare death at UNC Hospitals will need to discuss with his or her supervising physician and enter into a collaborative practice or supervisory agreement with the appropriate language. A copy of the revised agreement will need to be provided to the Office of Medical Staff Services via campus mail to CB#7600 attention Kimberly Robinson or by emailing to Kimberly.Robinson@unchealth.unc.edu.

Please note that Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are responsible for accurately representing to UNC Hospitals physicians and staff whether or not they are appropriately authorized to declare death.

If you have any questions about this change in policy or how to amend a collaborative practice or supervisory agreement, please contact Betsy Bryant Shilliday at betsy_bryant@med.unc.edu.
