{"id":3834,"date":"2021-08-07T23:23:23","date_gmt":"2021-08-08T03:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/app\/?page_id=3834"},"modified":"2025-07-03T15:14:33","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T19:14:33","slug":"1-visiting-pa-student-application-policy-and-procedure","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/app\/app-student-rotations\/visiting-pa-student-rotations\/1-visiting-pa-student-application-policy-and-procedure\/","title":{"rendered":"Visiting PA Student Policy and Procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Visiting PA students must follow the procedures outlined in the Visiting PA Student Policy provided below.\u00a0 Students should not contact preceptors independently or arrange rotations outside of the procedures outlined in the Visiting PA Student Policy provided below.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong><em>Visiting PA Student <\/em> Student Application Policy and Procedures<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li>All Visiting PA student clinical requests, placements, contracts, compliance and on boarding <strong>MUST<\/strong> be coordinated through the APP Center.<\/li>\n<li>Limited opportunities for clinical year rotations are available to students from Visiting PA programs for ELECTIVE rotations. Visiting PA students CANNOT complete CORE rotations at UNC Hospitals.\u00a0 Approved Visiting PA students from an accredited Physician Assistant Program will be eligible to enroll in ELECTIVE clinical rotations for a maximum of eight weeks total in the academic year (UNC PA School calendar). Enrollment in didactic courses is not available to Visiting PA students.<\/li>\n<li>Participation in a Visiting PA student elective rotation <strong>requires completion of the Visiting PA student elective rotation request application <\/strong>via the APP Center website (see link below).\u00a0 Please note that all <strong>requests<\/strong> for Visiting PA Student Rotations <em><strong>MUST<\/strong><\/em> <strong>originate from the Visiting PA program clinical faculty\/staff<\/strong> in order to ensure that they have been approved by the Visiting PA program.<\/li>\n<li>If the APP Center determines that a Visiting PA student elective rotation is available, participation in the elective rotation requires execution of an Affiliation Agreement between the student\u2019s home institution and UNC Hospitals unless an active agreement is already in place.<\/li>\n<li>Visiting PA Students with a confirmed rotation must complete all compliance and on boarding outlined on the APP Center Visiting PA Student webpages.<\/li>\n<li>UNC Hospital reserves the right to collect a $500 Visiting PA Student Rotation administration charge.\u00a0 Payment of the $500 administration charge is due at least 30 days prior to the beginning of clinical rotation period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: inherit;font-size: 24px\">Apply for a Rotation<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"introText \">\n<p>The FIRST STEP in the process is for the <strong>Visiting PA program clinical faculty\/staff to apply for a rotation on behalf of the Visiting PA student<\/strong> by submitting the online Visiting PA Student Rotation Request Application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To complete the online Visiting PA Student application click on this link:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/app\/app-student-rotations\/visiting-pa-student-rotations\/visiting-pa-student-rotation-application\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visiting PA Student Rotation Request Application<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0 Submitting a request does <strong>not<\/strong> guarantee placement.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>APP Center Student Placement Manager will review elective rotation request to determine feasibility.\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\n<li>Feasibility is determined by many factors, including the priority schedule (see below), site and preceptor availability, as well as the multitude of other learners present at UNC clinical sites which may dilute the potential experience of a visiting student<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prioritization of Requests:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Rotations are NOT based on first-come first-served basis.\u00a0 APP student rotation requests MUST adhere to application deadlines and are prioritized as follows:\n<ol>\n<li>UNC-Chapel Hill students<\/li>\n<li>UNC Health employees<\/li>\n<li>Other UNC system schools<\/li>\n<li>Other in state schools<\/li>\n<li>NC residents attending out of state programs<\/li>\n<li>Out of state students in out of state programs<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>The visiting student\u2019s PA Program representative will be notified of feasibility determination<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Prerequisites \u2013 students must:\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\n<li>Have successfully completed the didactic requirements from an accredited Physician Assistant Program<\/li>\n<li>Be currently enrolled and in good standing for the clinical year at an accredited Physician Assistant Program<\/li>\n<li>Have received approval from home clinical coordinator to proceed with the Visiting PA student application<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>REMINDER:\u00a0 <strong>UNC Hospitals Sites ONLY include <\/strong>UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus, as well as all UNC SOM clinics.<\/p>\n<p>UNC Rex, Chatham Hospital and UNCPN are NOT part of UNC-Hospitals\/SOM clinic locations where the APP Center places students.\u00a0 Schools need to contact those UNC Health entities separately as they have their own student placement processes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: inherit;font-size: 24px\">Notification of Placement<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Clinical rotations are approved and confirmed through the APP Center.\u00a0 If a preceptor is located and the rotation is approved, the APP Center will send the student, their school and the preceptor a Placement Confirmation Notification email.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preceptor information will be provided to the faculty or staff representative from the visiting student\u2019s PA program via the rotation notification email.\u00a0 The school or visiting PA student should contact the preceptor to work out final scheduling details.<\/li>\n<li>The visiting PA student\u2019s program will be responsible for obtaining all evaluations and other paperwork required by their program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to Expect After Rotation Notification<\/h3>\n<p>Once a rotation is approved and the notification email is sent, the student should begin the compliance and on boarding process by following the instructions located on the
