{"id":2298,"date":"2011-08-09T17:35:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T21:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bhomc\/bhomc\/mclendon-thomas-award\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T13:39:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T17:39:54","slug":"mclendon-thomas-award","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bhomc\/mclendon-thomas-award\/","title":{"rendered":"McLendon-Thomas Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Fellowship award overview<\/h2>\n<p>The\u202fMcLendon-Thomas Award supports\u202fscholarly research on <strong>the history of medicine<\/strong> that makes\u202fsignificant use of the rich and deep resources available in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\u2019s special collections, home to the Health Sciences History Collection which is part of the Rare Book Collection.<\/p>\n<p>This fellowship supports a one-, two-, or three-month residency at Wilson Special Collections Library which must take place between June 1 and October 31, 2023. The length of the residency depends upon demonstrated need to consult special collection materials.<\/p>\n<p>The award is $3,000 per month.<\/p>\n<h2>Fellowship eligibility<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Full-time master\u2019s or doctoral students\n<ul>\n<li>Enrolled in a graduate program<\/li>\n<li>Currently working on a thesis or dissertation project on the history of medicine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Agree to\n<ul>\n<li>Submit a research proposal and research plan that draws deeply and substantively on the collections of the Wilson Special Collections Library<\/li>\n<li>Commit to a full-time research residency at Wilson Library for the duration of the award\n<ul>\n<li>The residency must take place during the research year: June 1 of the year awarded to May 31 of the following spring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Participate in the intellectual life of the Library and the fellowship program, which includes:\n<ul>\n<li>A public presentation of research findings and experiences at the Wilson Library Research Forum<\/li>\n<li>The submission of a brief research report<\/li>\n<li>An invitation to present at the Bullitt History of Medicine Club lecture series<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Application instructions<\/h2>\n<p>All applications open in December and application materials are due by\u202f<strong>midnight ET on January 31<\/strong>.
