Bullitt Club Lecture Series Presents<\/p>\n
Carrie Streeter Mind-Body Medicine and Black Women’s Clubs in the Era of Jim Crow<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n REGISTER<\/a>\u00a0for this event.<\/strong><\/p>\n Lecture:<\/strong><\/p>\n When asked why Black women formed politically\u00a0minded clubs during an era of rising racial segregation and oppressive violence, one leader aptly described such efforts as \u201cnothing less than organized anxiety.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n By exploring records of several clubs\u2019\u00a0practices of relaxation and breathing exercises, this\u00a0lecture\u00a0will\u00a0chronicle one of the ways that Black women \u201corganized\u201d their anxiety. In addition to illuminating a long-overlooked history of wellness in Black communities, the talk will address larger questions about the intersecting histories of medicine,\u00a0race\u00a0and health\u2014particularly as such dynamics inform the cultural production of diagnostic conceptions and therapeutic treatments for ailments like nervousness, insomnia and indigestion.<\/span><\/p>\n Speaker: <\/strong>Carrie Streeter is a Ph<\/span>.<\/span>D<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0candidate at the University of California San Diego, specializing in U<\/span>nited States\u00a0<\/span>history of health,\u00a0<\/span>gender<\/span>\u00a0and race.
