Simone Kropf History of Chagas\u00a0<\/span>D<\/span>isease:\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>cience and\u00a0<\/span>H<\/span>ealth in Brazil<\/span><\/p>\n REGISTER<\/a>\u00a0for this event.<\/strong><\/p>\n Lecture: <\/strong>This\u00a0lecture will\u00a0explore\u00a0the history of Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis), discovered by the physician Carlos Chagas in 1909 in a poor, rural area of Brazil.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The talk\u00a0will focus on studies and debates\u00a0on\u00a0Chagas disease as a medical and social problem connected to poor health conditions of the rural population and considered to be an obstacle to Brazil\u2019s project of modernization.\u00a0It\u00a0will also address the controversies about clinical and epidemiological aspects of the disease, in a context of intense nationalism and disagreements about the political meanings of the so-called tropical diseases. This is a case that sheds light on relationships between science,\u00a0health\u00a0and society in specific historical contexts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Speaker:<\/strong> Simone P.\u00a0<\/span>Kropf<\/span>\u00a0holds a Ph<\/span>.<\/span>D<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>istory from the\u00a0<\/span>Universidade<\/span>\u00a0Federal Fluminense, in Brazil, and is a\u00a0<\/span>professor at the\u00a0<\/span>g<\/span>raduate\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>rogram of the\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>istory of\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ciences and\u00a0<\/span>h<\/span>ealth at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Rio de Janeiro. She was a visiting scholar at the\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>enter for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) at the University of Michigan 2017-2018.
