The UNC Bell Tower will ring an additional nine times in recognition of George Floyd’s final trauma. If you are able, we invite you to take 9 minutes and 29 seconds at that time to reflect in silence. (During the police officer’s trial, the original time of 8 minutes and 46 seconds was proven inaccurate and has been updated since to the correct time of 9 minutes and 29 seconds.)

Culture of Care Series – Care in the Midst of Chaos: Providing Reasonable Flexibility

The final event in the “Culture of Care” series, presented by the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion, in partnership with the Center for Faculty Excellence and Student Affairs, this event will focus on flexibility.
An unprecedented year has created the need for increased flexibility in our care for students, but what does this “flexibility” look like? Colleagues from across UNC will provide examples of “reasonable flexibility” in their work with students.

DEI Trainings/UNC SOM DEI Certificate Program

There are additional opportunities to attend DEI training sessions offered by School of Medicine this summer + (Unconscious Bias, Respecting All, Racial Justice Workshop).
The program’s curriculum offers workshops and trainings designed to broaden awareness about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion topics among the SOM faculty/staff and deepen engagement with and between individuals in the SOM at all levels – from patients to leadership.

Respecting All

June 10 12:30 PM – 3 PM
This workshop explores microaggressions and biased behavior prevalent in the SOM and provides participants tools with which to intervene when witnessing acts of disrespect and discrimination.

Unconscious Bias

June 17 8 AM – 10:30 AM
Explores unintended/implicit bias and introduces foundational concepts that are necessary to additional engagement with DEI-related topics and issues.

Digital Accessibility Awareness

Want to make sure that your website, course, software, or videos are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities, but don’t know where to start?
This training is for you. The goal of this DAA training is to build your awareness of the techniques for making digital content accessible to a wide variety of people. To better serve our UNC community we have two forms of registrations available. Permanent employees should use the Carolina Talent link so we can ensure you get credit for taking our courses. Temp workers, students and other affiliates should use the LearningStream link.

Health Care Safe Zone Training

June 15 10 AM – 2 PM
Health Care Safe Zone is a four-hour alternative to Standard Safe Zone that similarly introduces concepts, terminology and resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Online training open to all.

Inclusive STEM Teaching Project

June 15 – July 27, 2-3 hours per week.

A training course to strongly consider if you’re a mentor/teacher. The Inclusive STEM Teaching Project is a 6 week course designed to advance the awareness, self-efficacy, and the ability of faculty, postdocs, and doctoral students to cultivate inclusive STEM learning environments for all their students and to develop themselves as reflective, inclusive practitioners.

The Inclusive STEM Teaching Project, a National Science Foundation grant-funded program, is hosting a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from June 15th – July 27th via edX. This six-week course is designed to advance the awareness, self-efficacy, and ability of STEM faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and staff to cultivate inclusive learning environments for all of their students. Participants will engage in deep reflection and discussion around topics of equity and inclusion across a variety of institutional contexts.

In addition, the asynchronous online activities will be extended through synchronous virtual learning communities led by trained facilitators at institutions across the country. This optional course component deepens reflection and learning of the material and connects course learners to each other in a meaningful way.

Standard Safe Zone Training

Targeting Equity in Access to Mentoring (TEAM) ADVANCE

We highly encourage faculty to complete the Spring 2021 survey before the it closes Friday, May 28. Participation will help TEAM ADVANCE to observe trends and continue to understand how faculty are mentored at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The Spring 2021 Mentoring Climate Survey is open to all faculty, tenure track or fixed-term, to complete by end of day Friday, May 28, 2021.
