Eastern & Southern Culture celebration

July 30 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Faculty, staff, research scholars, students, staff, interns, postdocs, and all members,
Please attend our next departmental lunch/potluck on July 30th in 3007 GMB to celebrate Eastern & Southern Asians and their contributions to science, culture, and society as a whole. We welcome those who would like to contribute by bringing a dish from the region. Thank you to our Community Engagement committee for organizing our monthly socials around food and culture.
text "Eastern and Southern (E/S) Asian American heritage in the United States is rich and diverse, shaped by two centuries of immigration, cultural contributions, and mutual struggles for equality. Despite making great progress in fighting inequality, E/S Asian Americans still continue to face challenges, including stereotypes, social barriers, and underrepresentation in media and politics. Regardless of the historical challenges, E/S Asian Americans have made significant cultural contributions in various fields, including literature, art, cuisine, science and technology. A few examples of prominent scientists include Flossie Wong-Staal and her work studying HIV, Nobel prize winner Yuan T. Lee and his study in dynamics of elementary chemical processes, Shuji Nakamura, the inventor of the blue LED, and Roseli Ocampo-Friedmann for her work studying extremophiles which has contributed to modern astrobiology. Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, who won the Nobel prize in Chemistry in 2009 for his work understanding the structural biology of the ribosome. Nergis Mavalvala who was fundamental to our understanding of gravitational waves, earning her a Nobel prize. Their contributions, and many more like them, are intrinsic to the diversity of the United States, and are exemplary of the resilience and talent of Eastern and Southern Asians." designs swirls
