“The role of a PhD is very important in academia but I feel that they aren’t given any importance. Nobody cares about them. They are the lowest ones in this food chain.” – PhD scholar, India; CACTUS Mental Health Survey Report 2020
As more open discussions about researcher mental health have been coming out of the shadows over the past few years, a growing body of evidence continues to demand urgent attention for the mental health of PhD researchers.
In Nature’s 2019 PhD Survey, 36% of the respondents said they had sought help for anxiety or depression related to their PhD. Another study found that one in two PhD researchers experience psychological distress, and one in three are at risk of a common psychiatric disorder (Auerbach et al., 2016). Recent results from the CACTUS Mental Health Survey showed that when compared with other academic roles across the respondent pool, PhD scholars were consistently more likely to state that they felt overwhelmed by their work situation frequently.
These alarming numbers indicate that the mental health of PhD researchers requires immediate acknowledgement and discussion!

Join this panel of passionate researchers and strong mental health advocates as they discuss PhD mental health within the existing academic culture, and some of the stressors and challenges experienced by PhD researchers that could result in poorer mental health and wellbeing among this group. They will also touch upon several interesting findings and PhD student-specific insights from CACTUS’ recently released survey results. Hear what over 3,900 PhD students who participated in the CACTUS Mental Health Survey had to say about joy and stress triggers in their work environment, gain insights from the panellists’ own experiences, and get helpful suggestions on what institutions can do to better support their researchers.
