Aziz Sancar, PhD

Professor Aziz Sancar, Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry & Biophysics, has been elected as a 2005 member to the distinguished National Academy of Sciences and to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. For two decades, Aziz has pioneered the use of in vitro biochemical approaches to identify the numerous components of DNA repair and their precise contributions to the process. In recent years, he has also made fundamental discoveries in the molecular circuitry of circadian rhythm. In 2001, Aziz was given the North Carolina Distinguished Chemist Award from the American Chemical Society. Aziz joins Professor Richard Wolfenden as a member of these prestigious Academies.
