The UNC-CH School of Medicine Academy of Educators was founded in October 2006 as a part of the School’s strategic plan to enhance research and scholarship towards excellence in teaching. The Academy of Educators Committee on Teaching Awards has established a number of teaching awards to recognize the importance of excellence in medical student teaching, increase the prestige of great teachers and make teaching a more viable part of a faculty member’s career path.

There are eight teaching awards given annually to recognize the importance of excellence in medical student teaching. They seek to increase the prestige of great teachers and make teaching a more viable part of a faculty member’s career path. The highest honor is the Lifetime Achievement Award for Medical Teaching which is given to a faculty member who has demonstrated sustained excellence in teaching and mentoring medical students over 10 years or more.

Dr. Chaney is the 2012 recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Medical Teaching. He is also an elected Fellow of the Academy of Educators. Dr. Chaney began lecturing at UNC in 1975 and was the course director for Medical Biochemistry for a consecutive twenty years and then again from 2000-2004; as well as a course director for Molecules to Cells from 2005-2009. Currently, Dr. Chaney is in phased retirement but lectures in many modules for Molecules to Cells as well as for Dental Biochemistry. Dr. Chaney has been a longstanding and dedicated educator, course leader, and scholar at UNC and most deserving of this lifetime achievement honor.
