Today is the beginning of Black History Month, a time to celebrate the immeasurable contributions that Black people have made across our society. While we celebrate the leaders and progress of the past, this year has reminded us of how much work remains to achieve our mission of true equality.
I want to thank the members of our UNC Health Black Alliance Employee Resource Group for their work and for giving of their time and talents to develop several exciting events that will take place over the next month. A full list is available here. In addition, UNC School of Medicine student members of the Student National Medical Association and White Coats 4 Black Lives have launched a campaign called “Actions Speak Louder,” which you can learn about here.
On January 20, I watched in awe as Amanda Gorman recited her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s inauguration. If you have not watched her delivery, or read the text, I would encourage you to take a moment to do so. This powerful passage in particular stuck with me:
We are striving to forge a union with purpose,
to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man.
And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us,
but what stands before us.
What stands before us in this moment is a chance to make and shape history and to promote equity and inclusion for all. Let’s commit Amanda Gorman’s beautiful words to actions.

Por eso alzamos nuestra mirada no a aquello que está entre nosotros,
sino a lo que está ante nosotros.
Lo que está ante nosotros en este momento es la oportunidad de hacer historia y darle forma para promover la equidad e inclusión para todos. Vamos a comprometernos a que las bellas palabras de Amanda Gorman se hagan realidad.
