Diversity Equity and Inclusion

The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics believes that diversity is crucial to our pursuit of academic excellence, and is deeply committed to creating a diverse and inclusive community. We support UNC’s policy, which states that “the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is committed to equality of opportunity and pledges that it will not practice or permit discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, gender, national origin, age, religion, creed, disability, veteran’s status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

With the motto lux, libertas (light and liberty) the University of North Carolina has affirmed its commitment to the principles of transparency and personal freedom. The University is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment and to ensuring that educational and employment decisions are based on individuals’ abilities and qualifications. Consistent with these principles and applicable laws, it is, therefore, our policy not to discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or veteran status, as articulated in the University’s Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment, and Related Misconduct.

New website dedicated to our DEI work

In November 2020, the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is excited to announce that we have a new website dedicated to Diversity Equity and Inclusion, thanks to Carolyn Clabo our Director of Communications and Development. She worked closely with our ITS team to design, create, and publish a brand new DEI WordPress website!

Thanks to Ms. Clabo for her foresight, quick action, and project planning, our department has the first updated Diversity and Inclusion website across all divisions at UNC School of Medicine. The Biochemistry and Biophysics department efforts preceded the updates to the Provosts D&I website. After taking inventory of websites across campus, Carolyn worked closely with our designers at SOM ITS to inform them of which unit websites needed to be updated to include the latest offerings of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training and opportunities to get involved in this work.

Our Diversity and Inclusion website now includes these features:

  • resources
  • diversity statement
  • student mistreatment & learning environment concern
  • DEI events
  • DEI news
  • Diversity committee directory
  • Diversity Liaison contact information
  • campus resources
  • DEI Resources/organizations
  • Affinity Groups/Organizations
  • SOM Resources
  • UNC Mental Health Resources
  • DEI external resources
