On behalf of the 2019 BCBP retreat committee, we are pleased to invite you to register for the 2019 departmental retreat on October 11th at the Carolina Inn (https://www.med.unc.edu/biochem/event/biochemistry-and-biophysics-research-retreat-at-carolina-inn-oct-11-2019/). This year we have invited two fantastic alumni of the BCBP PhD program who have now established their own successful research programs, Drs. Michael Johnson and Jian Hu. Dr. Johnson (class of 2011, https://immunobiology.arizona.edu/research/johnson-lab) is an Assistant Professor of Immunobiology at the University of Arizona. In addition to developing a vibrant research program studying bacterial metal homeostasis during infection, Dr. Johnson has a passion for science communication and is the creator of the Science Sound Bites podcast and the BlackScienceBlog. Dr. Hu (class of 2007,https://www.mdanderson.org/research/departments-labs-institutes/labs/hu-laboratory.html) is an Assistant Professor of Cancer Biology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Hu is a Kimmel Scholar and is a rising leader in stem cell and glial cell biology in both cancer and neurodegeneration.

In addition, to two alumni keynote presentations, the retreat will include short talks from graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and research faculty selected from abstract submissions as well as two poster sessions. Awards will be given for top oral and poster presentations!

Finally, we are piloting lunch mentorship topic tables at this year’s retreat. If interested, please select a topic during the registration process and join departmental faculty, post-docs, and invited guests for this career development activity. Tables will be available for topics with sufficient interest from registrants.

Important upcoming deadlines:

Abstract submission: September 12, 2019 (Late submissions will not be considered for short talks so get your abstracts in on time!)

Retreat registration: September 27, 2019

Please contact Jamie Desoto with any questions or concerns. We are looking forward to a great turnout for this year’s retreat!
