This monthly offering of the Unconscious Bias Awareness workshop is for employees of the UNC School of Medicine and meets the core requirement of the SOM DEI Certificate Program for SOM faculty and staff. The Office of Inclusive Excellence has launched the DEI Certificate Program which program is designed for SOM faculty and staff to broaden their understanding of topics critical to achieving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and to promote personal, professional, and institutional growth. This new initiative is strongly aligned with the SOM’s Strategic Imperative on Diversity and Inclusion – to achieve diversity and a culture of belonging that reflects the people of NC and demonstrates our commitment to treat and serve them well. Recent scientific advances indicate that the human mind observes the world and interacts with other people in ways outside of our awareness. Revealing these unconscious biases improves our understanding of the role the brain plays in addressing the challenges to diversity and inclusion, and enables us to improve decision-making skills, employee engagement, team inclusiveness, and cross-cultural communication. Learning objectives and outcomes of this workshop: Understand the science and research of unconscious bias
Identify how bias and the processes of the unconscious mind can impact critical decisions and results
Become aware of your own background, and its impact on your perceptions so you are better able to advocate for inclusion in your organization
Apply new strategies for practicing more conscious awareness individually and organizationally
If you have questions, then please contact the Office of Inclusive Excellence at diversity@med.unc.edu.
