On February 23, 2023, the UNC Department of biochemists and biophysicists held an event in celebration of Black History Month. Earlier this month, each lab nominated black scientists specifically black biochemists and biophysicists which was then highlighted 23 individuals in a rotating slideshow during our celebration. Our Distinguished Joint Professor Jack Griffith, PhD, and postdoc Taghreed Al-Turki, PhD, found that telomeres at the tips of chromosomes contain sufficient genetic information to produce two small proteins, one of which they found is elevated in some human cancer cells.

The Graduate School’s Diversity and Student Success program, which hosted a summit titled Surviving and Thriving: Narratives from graduate students of color in early April of 2022, is now hosting several pop-up exhibits in departments and units at UNC-Chapel Hill.
