{"id":3466,"date":"2008-01-31T17:45:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-31T22:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/program\/for-current-students\/degree-requirements\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T09:44:52","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T13:44:52","slug":"degree-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/program\/for-current-students\/degree-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"Departmental Degree Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>General Requirements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete BBSP requirements<\/li>\n<li>Residency: be in residence at least 4 semesters<\/li>\n<li>Course Load: carry at least 9 credits per semester for two years<\/li>\n<li>Complete Graduate School&#8217;s minimum required hours (36 credits)<\/li>\n<li>Seminar attendance: attend 2\/3 of department seminars each semester<\/li>\n<li>Exams: pass both oral and written comprehensive exams<\/li>\n<li>Meet annually with committee and submit IDPs to department<\/li>\n<li>Defense: successfully defend dissertation<\/li>\n<li>Teaching: serve one semester as a teaching assistant<\/li>\n<li>Publication: complete original research accepted as first-authored publications in high quality, peer-reviewed journals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Course Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>See each track (<a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/biochem\/program\/for-current-students\/degree-requirements\/biochemistry-and-molecular-biology-track-degree-requirements\">Biochemistry Track<\/a> or <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"\/biochem\/program\/for-current-students\/degree-requirements\/biophysics-track\">Biophysics Track<\/a>) for track specific requirements. All students require:<\/p>\n<h3>I. Departmental Cores:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>BIOC 701 Critical Analysis in Biochemistry Seminars\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">OR<\/span> BIOC 704 Critical Analysis in Biophysics Seminars<\/li>\n<li>BIOC 710 &#8211; Scientific Communication (enroll in course twice: 2nd year grant writing, 4th year scientific presentation)\n<ul>\n<li>Student matriculating prior to fall 2021 &#8211; BIOC 712 (2 credits) and BIOC 715 (2 credits) \u00a0is equivalent to taking BIOC 710 twice (total of 4 credits)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>II.
