{"id":10169,"date":"2019-07-18T11:03:50","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T15:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/?p=10169"},"modified":"2019-11-16T15:03:17","modified_gmt":"2019-11-16T20:03:17","slug":"unc-school-of-medicine-surpasses-500m-in-research-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/news\/unc-school-of-medicine-surpasses-500m-in-research-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"UNC School of Medicine surpasses $500M in Research Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"main\" class=\"container-fluid row-fluid\" role=\"main\">\n<div id=\"content\">\n<article class=\"span9\" role=\"article\" aria-labelledby=\"pageTitle\">\n<div id=\"content-area\">\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\" class=\"plain\">\n<p>The UNC School of Medicine has surpassed $500 million in research funding, marking a major milestone for the School\u2019s expanding research enterprise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10170 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2019\/07\/500-m-photo.jpg\" alt=\"photo for UNC School of Medicine surpasses $500M in Research Funding\" width=\"600\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In FY-19, the UNC School of Medicine received a total of $510,750,975.13 in funding, an increase of more than $48 million from FY-18.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis accomplishment is a testament to our incredible faculty, students, and staff who come to work each day committed to advancing our knowledge of human health, and underscores the UNC School of Medicine\u2019s commitment to being a global leader in basic and clinical research,\u201d said Blossom Damania, PhD, Vice Dean for Research at the UNC School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Research funding for the School of Medicine has grown steadily over the last several years, increasing by more than $60 million since FY-17. This year\u2019s funding increase represents a $24.5 million increase in federal research expenditures, and close to $10 million growth in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).<\/p>\n<p>The numbers also reflect the breadth of the School of Medicine\u2019s research enterprise, with 17 Departments, Centers, and Institutes receiving at least $10 million in funding, and 31 receiving at least $4 million in FY-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe $500 million milestone of research funding is a tremendous achievement. Not only are we growing in total awards, but we are growing in overall scientific impact, improving the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians and others whom we serve,\u201d said Cristy Page, MD,
