Pagano Award to recognize their leadership of notable scientific publications.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsten Bryant, PhD, Ari Pani, PhD, and John Pryor, PhD, were selected through a competitive process for the honor, which comes with a $2,500 award. Pagano was the founding director of the cancer center and its postdoctoral training program. Funded by a gift from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the awards were established in 2002 to recognize noteworthy papers authored by UNC Lineberger\u2019s postdoctoral fellows and published in high-impact journals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese awards recognize the hard work of our postdoctoral researchers, who are leading important science to try\u00a0to beat the deadliest cancers and help solve complex scientific problems,\u201d said UNC Lineberger\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/directory\/brian-d.-strahl\/\">Brian Strahl, PhD<\/a>, professor in the UNC School of Medicine Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, who chaired the award committee.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11881\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 255px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11881\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2019\/11\/Bryant-crop-FINAL-245x300-245x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Kirsten Bryant, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bryant, who is now a research assistant professor in the UNC School of Medicine, was recognized for her work on a study published in Nature Medicine. She helped lead the study while working as a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of UNC Lineberger\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/directory\/channing-j-der\/\">Channing Der, PhD<\/a>, the Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor in the UNC School of Medicine Department of Pharmacology.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/news\/potential-treatment-strategy-uncovered-for-pancreatic-cancer\/\">paper<\/a>\u00a0detailed findings for a possible new therapeutic strategy for pancreatic cancer that involves blocking the cancer cells\u2019 energy source.<\/p>\n<p>In his nomination letter, Der said Bryant not only authored the study and performed the majority of experiments, she also came up with the idea. The study represented a shift for Der\u2019s lab toward targeting cellular metabolism as a therapeutic strategy. Her work led to planning for multiple clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn summary, to say that Bryant et al is a \u2018notable\u2019 publication is a vast understatement,\u201d Der said. \u201cThat Kirsten\u2019s findings may redefine the treatment for pancreatic cancer, the only cancer with a single digit five-year survival rate, may represent one of the most significant findings in pancreatic cancer treatment in decades,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11883\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 235px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11883\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2019\/11\/Pani-225x300-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Ari Pani, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pani was the \u201cdriving force\u201d behind a paper published in the journal eLife in which he used fluorescent tags to show the signaling protein Wnt interacting with its receptor in\u00a0<em>C. elegans<\/em>, an organism often used to study genetics.<\/p>\n<p>UNC Lineberger\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/directory\/bob-goldstein\/\">Bob Goldstein, PhD<\/a>, James L. Peacock III Distinguished Professor in the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Biology, said Pani was also able to improve tools used to edit the organism\u2019s genome. He has since secured a tenure-track faculty position at the University of Virginia, where he will start his own lab in the fall, Goldstein said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe began his postdoc by learning to use\u00a0<em>C. elegans<\/em>\u00a0as a model system and then learning and indeed improving CRISPR-based methods for editing the\u00a0<em>C. elegans<\/em>\u00a0genome \u2013 improving methods that were only just then being developed (for\u00a0<em>C. elegans<\/em>) by one of his lab mates and by others in the field as he arrived in my lab,\u201d Goldstein said.<\/p>\n<p>John Pryor, PhD, was honored for his work on the paper, \u201cRibonucleotide incorporate enables repair of chromosome breaks by non-homologous end-joining,\u201d as part of the lab of UNC Lineberger\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/directory\/dale-ramsden\/\">Dale Ramsden, PhD<\/a>, a professor in the UNC School of Medicine Department of Biochemistry &amp; Biophysics.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11884\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 198px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11884\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2019\/11\/pryor_photo_cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"250\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">John Pryor, Ph.D.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/news-archives\/ramsden-uncovers-an-exception-to-biologys-rules\/\">paper<\/a>, published in Science, uncovered a finding that is an exception to a tenant of the central dogma of biology. The study found that ribonucleotides, the building blocks of RNA, are frequently added into the human genome during a specific DNA repair process. The finding represented a significant shift away from the foundational principle that our genetic code is written as DNA, while RNA is the language of proteins.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8202\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8202\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2018\/12\/Dale-Ramsden-PhD-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"photo of Dale Ramsden, Ph.D., UNC Prof. and Dir. of Graduate Studies for Biochemistry &amp; Biophysics\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2018\/12\/Dale-Ramsden-PhD-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2018\/12\/Dale-Ramsden-PhD-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2018\/12\/Dale-Ramsden-PhD-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Dale Ramsden, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his nomination letter, Ramsden said Pryor initiated the project, and the paper that resulted from the study was one of the most important papers to come out of his lab. The work could provide a way that researchers could sensitize cancer cells to radiation. Ramsden also complimented Pryor for his overall performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll in all, John was\u00a0 quite the bargain \u2013 he had external grant support for all six of the years he was in my lab, during which he made major contributions to eight publications,\u201d Ramsden said. \u201cThere is a long list of awards that he\u2019s won, including best PhD thesis as a pre-doc, and the top oral presentation prize at the Cancer Biology Training Consortium meeting as a postdoc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Courtesy of Laura Oleniacz, Science Communication Manager at Lineberger<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three postdoctoral fellows receive the Joseph S.
