Battle Distinguished Cancer Research Award.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51557\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51557 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/files\/2020\/02\/sancar-aziz-at-nobel-celebration_26684579502_o-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"Aziz Sancar\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Aziz Sancar, MD, PhD. Photo by Jon Gardiner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sancar, who is one of two faculty members from the UNC-Chapel Hill to win a Nobel Prize, was recognized for his distinguished career in science and discoveries in the field of DNA repair.<\/p>\n<p>Sancar was honored at a reception in the cancer center atrium on Friday that drew faculty and leaders from UNC Lineberger and UNC School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is delayed, but appropriate, that this year\u2019s Hyman Battle Award goes to Aziz Sancar, who has done so much directly relevant cancer research,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/directory\/h-shelton-earp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shelley Earp, MD<\/a>, director of UNC Lineberger, at Friday\u2019s reception.<\/p>\n<p>The Battle award, which includes a $25,000 prize, was established in 2007 by the Battle Foundation of Rocky Mount to recognize exceptional cancer research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Battle award fund is a permanent endowment held by <a href=\"https:\/\/uncmedicine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The UNC Health Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hyman L. Battle (1896-1972) established The Battle Foundation in 1946. His grandfather, Kemp Plummer Battle, was an early president of UNC-Chapel Hill, and both Kemp and Hyman were deeply interested in education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to say that I talk about you all the time, every time I can when I talk about UNC School of Medicine, and how proud we are to have you on the faculty,\u201d said UNC Lineberger\u2019s Blossom Damania, PhD, Boshamer Distinguished Professor in the UNC School of Medicine and vice dean for research, also speaking at Friday\u2019s reception.<\/p>\n<h2>Research and achievements<\/h2>\n<p>In Sancar\u2019s award notification letter, Damania and Earp championed Sancar\u2019s significant scientific contributions made over the course of his career.<\/p>\n<p>His work \u201cadvanced the understanding of the fundamental molecular mechanisms of DNA excision repair, delineating the circadian clock and its molecular links to DNA repair and which have provided a foundation for new approaches to cancer chemotherapy,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>UNC Lineberger\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/directory\/leslie-parise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Leslie Parise, PhD<\/a>, professor and chair of the UNC School of Medicine Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, wrote in her award nomination letter that Sancar, in addition to his early scientific discoveries of DNA repair mechanisms, has continued to publish novel and exciting work, including \u201cmapping the sites of DNA repair over the entire human genome.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12793\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12793\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2020\/02\/Sancar_Battle_Award_20200012-300x218-1-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"Aziz Sancar and Leslie Parise and S. Battle Distinguished Cancer Research Award on Friday, Feb. 7, in the Lineberger Building atrium.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis information is being used to identify specific mechanisms that allow cancer cells to repair DNA damage from UV radiation and chemotherapy,\u201d Parise said. \u201cThese new studies hold great promise in translational medicine and could lead to better drugs or the ability to make cancer cells more sensitive to existing drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To recognize his scientific achievements, Sancar was presented with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/news\/aziz-sancar-receives-2015-nobel-prize-in-chemistry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015<\/a> for his work showing how in bacteria, certain enzymes can repair DNA that has been damaged by ultraviolet light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour friends and colleagues are proud of the broad impact of your research, which is recognized internationally by many prizes and awards, including the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry that both shined a spotlight on your work, and the quality of science at our university,\u201d Damania and Earp wrote.<\/p>\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n<p>Sancar was born the seventh of eight children in Turkey. His father, a farmer, and his mother, who took care of the children and house, did not receive formal education but encouraged their children\u2019s studies. Sancar received his medical degree at Istanbul University School of Medicine in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>He practiced medicine in Turkey before earning a NATO Fellowship to work at Johns Hopkins University. He pursued a doctorate at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he worked under the late Claud S. Rupert, PhD, to study the process by which DNA damaged by UV light can be repaired by longer wavelength blue light in bacteria. It was at UT-Dallas that he met Gwendolyn Boles Sancar, MS, PhD, now his wife, and a UNC professor emeritus.<\/p>\n<p>His interest in DNA repair grew. Through postdoctoral work at Yale University, he identified and cloned several E. coli repair genes.<\/p>\n<p>Aziz and Gwen Sancar joined the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1982. Earp said Mary Ellen Jones, PhD, the then head of the biochemistry department and the first female department chair at UNC, was key to bringing them to UNC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously Mary Ellen Jones recognized at the time that this was a couple that would change the face of research at UNC,\u201d Earp said.<\/p>\n<p>At UNC, Sancar carried out \u201cseminal work\u201d on the biochemistry of DNA repair, according to Parise\u2019s nomination. In 1996, he published a study that described a mechanism of human DNA repair known as \u201cexcision\u201d repair.<\/p>\n<p>Sancar\u2019s scientific accomplishments include discovering that the cancer drug cisplatin kills cancer cells by disrupting nucleotide excision repair. He also is known for his work <a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/news-archives\/circadian-clocks-chemo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">uncovering the inner workings of the circadian clock<\/a> \u2013 a group of enzymes that keep us in proper rhythm with the 24-hour day and the four seasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is with great pleasure that we are giving this award,\u201d Earp said. \u201cThis isn\u2019t an award for past work that you\u2019ve done that\u2019s not inconsequential \u2026 Aziz\u2019s recent papers, as recent as last year, and actually this past week, have used the infrastructure in genomics \u2026 to do first-class research.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>Media Contact: Laura Oleniacz, Science Communications Manager at Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Aziz Sancar, MD, PhD, the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been named the 2019 recipient of the Hyman L.
