The UNC School of Medicine surpassed the $500 million milestone in fiscal year 2019, and the research enterprise has continued to grow since then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe year 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for our researchers amidst the campus-wide shut down and COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d said Blossom Damania, PhD, Vice Dean for Research at the UNC School of Medicine. \u201cThis did not stop our incredible faculty, students, and staff from pursuing their research that advances our knowledge of human health, and this underscores the UNC School of Medicine\u2019s commitment to being a global leader in basic and clinical research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Research funding for the School of Medicine has grown steadily over the last several years, increasing by more than $87 million since fiscal year 2017. This year\u2019s funding increase includes a $14-million growth in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).<\/p>\n<p>The UNC School of Medicine research funding of over $535 million accounts for more than half of all research funding at UNC-Chapel Hill, which surpassed the billion-dollar milestone this past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are tremendously proud that our total awards continue to grow, and that our outstanding researchers are at the forefront of their fields,\u201d said Cristy Page, MD, MPH, Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine. \u201cWe are constantly working to expand our scientific impact and improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
