{"id":15841,"date":"2020-10-20T14:39:05","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T18:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/?p=15841"},"modified":"2020-10-20T14:40:03","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T18:40:03","slug":"david-paul-phd-and-wolfgang-bergmeier-phd-publish-latest-research-in-blood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/news\/david-paul-phd-and-wolfgang-bergmeier-phd-publish-latest-research-in-blood\/","title":{"rendered":"David Paul, PhD and Wolfgang Bergmeier, PhD publish latest research in Blood"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"wi-article-title article-title-main\">Talin-1 is the principal platelet Rap1 effector of integrin activation<\/h4>\n<div class=\"article-groups left-flag\"><span class=\"article-client_type\">PLATELETS AND THROMBOPOIESIS<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"article-date\">September 3, 2020<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Recent Blood paper publication, collaborated with Mark Ginsberg, MD at UCSD to identify a unique mechanism regulating integrin-mediated platelet adhesion at sites of vascular injury:<\/p>\n<p>Wofgang Bergmeier, PhD and David Paul, PhD are co-authors on this study, showing that the small GTPase directly interacts with the cytoskeletal adapter protein, talin, to trigger integrin activation following platelet stimulation. This mechanism is unique as other blood cells depend on an intermediary protein that links Rap1 and talin. It is likely that this is an adaptation by platelets to be able to make firm adhesive contacts in a high shear environment.
