WinS\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Women in Science (WinS) is a student-led organization that aims to address gender disparities in STEM. As an on-campus group,\u00a0WinS\u00a0offers a platform to directly reach scientists in training at UNC Chapel Hill to facilitate their professional development and provide a community of support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WinSPIRE\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Women in Science Promoting Inclusion in Research Experiences (WinSPIRE)<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a\u00a0paid\u00a0six-week\u00a0high school summer \"WinSPIREresearch program designed to\u00a0increase representation of women and historically underrepresented groups in STEM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WinSPIRE\u00a0selects\u00a0promising woman-identifying and non-binary high schoolers from backgrounds underrepresented in STEM and pairs\u00a0them with a woman-identifying or non-binary mentor to work on a\u00a0research\u00a0project related to the\u00a0lab\u2019s\u00a0research\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0University of North Carolina. The students also\u00a0participate\u00a0in career\u00a0development and college-prep workshops led by women-identifying and non-binary college-prep mentors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4 students volunteered as WinSPIRE mentors<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

WinSPIRE\u2019s\u00a02021 program was a virtual half-day program to\u00a0provide\u00a0increased\u00a0flexibility during the pandemic.\u00a0This year,\u00a011\u00a0high school\u00a0students worked one-on-one with their research mentors to understand experimental design, data analysis\u00a0and\u00a0presentation,\u00a0reading primary scientific literature,\u00a0and producing\u00a0webpages about their research.\u00a0Students met with college prep mentors to learn more about careers they can pursue in science and the skills\u00a0they will\u00a0need to apply to and succeed in college.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sierra Cole (BCBP graduate student, <\/span>Gladfelter Lab<\/span><\/a>)\u00a0co-led a career panel of women in STEM during the final week of the program.\u00a0During the panel, students were able to\u00a0ask\u00a0women\u00a0across\u00a0a variety of different STEM fields to get a better understanding of different career paths available to them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A new addition to the virtual 2021 WinSPIRE program was the 3-week Hands on Experience (HonE). Groups of students were sent supplies to run their own experiments while at home. Odessa Goudy (BCBP PhD candidate<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>Kuhlman Lab<\/span><\/a>), Aubrie Weyhmiller (BCBP PhD candidate<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>Kuhlman Lab<\/span><\/a>), and Zhiyuan Yao (Pharmacology PhD candidate<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>Kuhlman Lab<\/span><\/a>)\u00a0co-led\u00a0the\u00a0\u201cMolecular Machines\u201d\u00a0HonE.\u00a0Odessa, Aubrie, and Zhiyuan created a new\u00a0HonE\u00a0by preparing\u00a0three\u00a0lesson plans and organizing the take-home-kit items.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cMolecular Machines\u201d\u00a0HonE\u00a0explored\u00a0an enzyme found in pineapples\u00a0as a model system to explore protein activity and structure.\u00a0The\u00a0group of high school\u00a0students\u00a0made hypotheses about how\u00a0different conditions such as temperature, pH, and source of enzyme affect\u00a0enzyme activity. The\u00a0students\u00a0then experimentally determined the change in enzyme activity by measuring the rate at which the pineapple enzyme broke down\u00a0gelatin.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Officially housed in the Office of Graduate Education,\u00a0WinSPIRE\u00a0is entirely run by women-identifying and non-binary graduate students, post-docs,\u00a0and faculty.\u00a0WinSPIRE\u00a0started in 2017 in the Chemistry department and has since grown to incorporate mentors and team members across the STEM fields including but not limited to Mathematics, Geology, and Biochemistry & Biophysics. All 37\u00a0WinSPIRE\u00a0alumni reported more interest and belonging in STEM after the program!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
