How do they get access to the lipid particles circulating in our blood? What is special about the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> lipase<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> structure that enables<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> its<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> function?<\/span><\/span><\/strong> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\">Answering<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> these questions will allow scientists to develop <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\">more effective <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\">therapeutics to activate lipases<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> and help clear out excess lipids<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\">several<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW98453499 BCX0\"> diseases.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW98453499 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">Uriel <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">Jean-Baptiste <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">is a third-year <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">Biochemistry <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">graduate student in the Neher lab who studies a special <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">lipase<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">, which is the Endothelial Lipase<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">EL<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">The <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">EL<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">an<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> enzyme that hydrolyzes lipids and facilitates their absorption into the inner<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">endothelial lining of our blood vessels.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> \u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">I am particularly measuring the rate of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> EL&#8217;s enzymatic reaction on different lipid substrates and trying to visualize its 3D structure using <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW103771780 BCX0\">CryoEM<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">\u201d<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">explains Uriel. \u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">I am also exploring how the EL\u2019s endogenous inhibitors prevent its lipase activity<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> when they are in our blood vessels\u201d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> continues Uriel. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">Other members of the Neher lab use cutting<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">edge technologies such as <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW103771780 BCX0\">Cryo<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\"> Electron Microscopy (<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW103771780 BCX0\">CryoEM<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW103771780 BCX0\">) to visualize the structure of lipases at extraordinarily detailed levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-24995 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2023\/01\/1-23-23-Neher-lab-image-2-for-uriel-interview-at-microscope.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"232\" \/>When asked what brought him into science<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\">Uriel explained<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\">,<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\">\u201cMy passion for science started in middle school, particularly in an Earth science class. I started to learn about the different layers of the Earth, how the cloud and rain cycle works, how plants grow from the soil and suck water from their roots\u201d. He realized he was interested in the structure of things in general and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\"> how<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\"> their unique structures can dictate their function. He decided to study Biochemistry as an undergraduate<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\"> student<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW230474607 BCX0\">.
