We are delighted to announce that Dr. Joanna Kovalski<\/b> has joined the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics as a tenure-track Assistant Professor, effective January 12, 2026<\/b>. She has been appointed as a full member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Dr. Kovalski\u2019s research centers on the<\/strong> post-transcriptional control of gene expression in cancer<\/b>, with a particular focus on how<\/strong> selective RNA translational mechanisms<\/b>\u00a0drive tumor growth.<\/strong> Her work aims to uncover how the tumorigenic proteome is shaped and to identify novel therapeutic vulnerabilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Dr. Kovalski earned her B.A. in Biochemistry and Archaeology\u00a0from Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a Ph.D. in Cancer Biology\u00a0from Stanford University, where she investigated Ras signaling in cancer. She recently completed her postdoctoral training at UCSF\u00a0under Dr. Davide Ruggero, developing genome-wide functional screening approaches\u00a0to reveal new mechanisms regulating oncogenic protein expression, including Myc.<\/p>\n

At UNC, the Kovalski Lab\u00a0will employ a systems-level approach, integrating functional screening, RNA biology, proteomics, in vivo models, and computational methods\u00a0to map the post-transcriptional regulatory code of cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Kovalski is currently accepting applications for a Research Assistant position\u00a0and will welcome rotation students in Spring 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
