{"id":4104,"date":"2014-03-26T20:15:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-27T00:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/bergmeier-receives-tenure\/"},"modified":"2018-08-01T10:28:14","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T14:28:14","slug":"bergmeier-receives-tenure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/news\/bergmeier-receives-tenure\/","title":{"rendered":"Wolfgang Bergmeier becomes associate professor with tenure."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">Congratulations to Wolfgang Bergmeier, associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics who received tenure as a UNC faculty effective March 1, 2014.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-section\">\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium size-full wp-image-4105\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/biochem\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/795\/2018\/07\/bergmeier-receives-tenure-image2.jpeg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" alt=\"image2\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Wolfgang Bergmerier, PhD<br \/>\n    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph_style_1\">Dr. Bergmeier received his PhD from Witten\/Herdecke University and completed his postdoctoral studies at Harvard University. His first independent lab was established at Thomas Jefferson University and in 2011, Dr. Bergmeier joined UNC as a faculty of Biochemistry and Biophysics with a joint appointment in the UNC McAllister Heart Institute. Research in his lab focuses on the adhesion mechanisms of platelets and neutrophils to sites of vascular injury\/activation. They are particularly interested in the role of calcium (Ca2+) as a signaling molecule that regulates the inside-out activation of integrin receptors. Since coming to UNC, Dr. Bergmeier has assembled a very active lab of young scientists along with a steady influx of undergraduate researchers and rotating graduate students training with his group. He\u2019s received funding from the NIH, American Heart Association, and the NC Biotechnology Center to further his efforts and also became an Associate Editor for <span class=\"style_1\">Thrombosis Research and was also recently <\/span>awarded an Investigator Recognition Award (BACH) from the International Society on Thrombosis &amp; Haemostasis.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about: <a
