He never left. He took pride in his new country \u2013 and his adopted hometown of Chapel Hill \u2013 much like he took pride in his home country of Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>His dedication to his work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RKFT8Iym8Zs\">DNA repair<\/a> and the <a href=\"\/biochem\/news\/sancar-lab-circadian-clock-puzzle\">circadian clock<\/a>, has earned him international acclaim, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/chemistry\/laureates\/2015\/press.html\">2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry<\/a>. Now he has been honored along with 41 others by the Carnegie Corporation of New York in its annual \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegie.org\/news\/articles\/2016-great-immigrants-pride-america\/\">Great Immigrants: The Pride of America<\/a>\u201d initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Carnegie Corporation President Vartan Gregorian said, \u201cThese accomplished Americans are immigrants like our forefathers, who founded this nation. They are representative of the millions of immigrants who have come to the United States for economic opportunity, education, political or religious asylum, security, or reunification with families and relatives. They, like all Americans, share a common faith in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The corporation is named after Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who became a leader in the American steel industry in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, as well as a notable philanthropist.<\/p>\n<p>Sancar, ever the sports fan, said of the honor, \u201cI am actually most proud of being in the same frame with Fernando Valenzuela.
