The awards are open to postdoctoral scholars in all disciplines and are designed to assist postdoctoral scholars in their continued professional development by supporting the recipients in conference travel, purchasing books, lab materials, or engaging in other scholarly activities that directly enhance the individual\u2019s professional growth. Each recipient receives a monetary award of a $1000 along with a plaque.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rothbart is an American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Brian Strahl, associate professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Rothbart\u2019s research has been focused on understanding the role of histone post-translational modifications in chromatin structure and function. In particular, he has progressed the development and implementation of a histone peptide microarray platform to study how these small chemical tags on histone proteins are interpreted inside the cell. Enabled by this technology, Dr. Rothbart has revealed chromatin-templated mechanisms regulating vital cellular processes including the developmental regulation of gene expression and the epigenetic
