Roberts Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pathology and director of the UNC Blood Research Center<\/a> published a study that identifies the intrinsic coagulation pathway as a potential target to prevent thrombotic and inflammatory complications after RBC transfusion. The article \u201cRed blood cell microvesicles activate the contact system, leading to factor IX activation via 2 independent pathways\u201d was published in the journal Blood. <\/a>Other authors include Rafal Pawlinski, PhD, Micah Mooberry, MD, and Dougald Monroe, PhD. Nigel Mackman<\/a>, PhD, the John Parker Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Pathology and Pharmacology, authored a perspective in Nature <\/a>entitled \u201cTherapeutic strategies for thrombosis: new targets and approaches.\u201d Other authors include Wolfgang Bergmeier, PhD, professor in the department of biochemistry and biophysics and member of the UNC Blood Research Center, Rick Stouffer, MD, chief of the division of cardiology, and Jeffrey Weitz, MD, at McMaster University.
