This protocol is part of the larger ACTIV (Accelerating COVID-Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccine) study.<\/p>\n<p>Raj Kasthuri, MBBS<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/news.unchealthcare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1159\/2021\/04\/raj-kasthuri.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"142\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UNC is now a fully active clinical site for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nhlbi-connects.org\/secure\/study\/8\">ACTIV-4c Post-Hospital Thrombosis Prevention Study<\/a>. This protocol is part of the larger ACTIV (Accelerating COVID-Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccine) study. This protocol focuses on preventing blood clots in patients discharged after being hospitalized with COVID-19. UNC is now enrolling participants in this adaptive, prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial to evaluation the efficacy and safety of antithrombotic strategies in patients with COVID-19 following hospital discharge.<\/p>\n<p>The UNC ACTIV-4c Team is led by the site Principal Investigator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/raj-kasthuri-mbbs\/\">Raj Kasthuri, MBBS<\/a>, Professor of Medicine.\u00a0 Other UNC faculty include, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/nigel-key\/\">Nigel Key, MD<\/a>, the Harold R. Roberts Distinguished Professor of Medicine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/directory\/stephan-moll-md\/\">Stephan Moll, MD<\/a>, Professor of Medicine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/htcenter\/about-the-center\/staff-directory-1\/micah-mooberry-md\">Micah Mooberry, MD<\/a>, Assistant Professor of Medicine, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/childrensresearch\/directory\/yasmina-abajas\/\">Yasmina Abajas, MD<\/a>, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics.\u00a0 The study team also include staff in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bloodresearchcenter\/\">UNC Blood Research Center<\/a>, Brett Phillips, Laura Finerty, Amy Brightwood, and Kelly Kivette.<\/p>\n<p>Patients infected with the SARS-CoV2 are at an increased risk of thrombotic events which contribute to overall morbidity and mortality.\u00a0 Recent hospitalization is associated with increased risk for VTE.\u00a0 The impact of COVID-19 on this increased risk for VTE after hospital discharge is unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Study Population: Adults \u2265 18 years of age with COVID-19 hospitalized 48 hours or longer ready for discharge from the hospital without an indication for or contraindication to anticoagulant therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Stage 1 intervention: prophylactic apixaban 2.5 mg bid vs. placebo<\/p>\n<p>Primary Endpoint: Composite endpoint of venous thromboembolism, ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, peripheral arterial thromboembolism, and all-cause mortality by 30 days after randomization<\/p>\n<p>Anticoagulant therapy has been shown to reduce VTE risk in select, high-risk patients with a recent hospitalization for an acute medical illness; whether post-discharge anticoagulant therapy benefits patients with COVID-19 is also unknown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNC is now a fully active clinical site for the ACTIV-4c Post-Hospital Thrombosis Prevention Study, led at UNC-Chapel Hill by Raj Kasthuri, MBBS, Professor of Medicine.
