BRIC Seminar Series April 2017

April 19, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

}

Alan Jasanoff 4_19_2017Join us on April 19th, 2017 for a presentation titled “Mapping neurochemical dynamics with molecular fMRI, hosted in conjunction with the Alcohol Center, by Dr. Alan Jasanoff, Associate Professor at MIT, from 12-1:00 pm in Marsico Hall, room 4004.

Abstract: The nascent experimental approach of molecular-level functional magnetic resonance imaging (molecular fMRI) offers unique potential for minimally-invasive mapping of molecular and cellular hallmarks of neural activity in brains of arbitrary size. The technology depends on the development of new MRI probes engineered from small molecule, protein, and nanoparticle-based platforms. I will discuss my lab’s efforts to incorporate such platforms into magnetically-active sensors for detection of neurochemical processes in the brain. I will present some of the first applications of these novel tools to map aspects of brain function in living animals, focusing on studies of monoamine signaling and transport. I will show results that relate spatially-localized molecular imaging data to brain-wide population activity measured using conventional fMRI. I will also discuss some of our additional ongoing efforts to expand molecular fMRI technology and its applications in systems neuroscience.
