{"id":8143,"date":"2025-08-27T10:34:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-27T14:34:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bric\/?page_id=8143"},"modified":"2025-08-27T15:04:17","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T19:04:17","slug":"dexa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bric\/preclinical-molecular-imaging\/pmi-equipment\/dexa\/","title":{"rendered":"DEXA Imaging"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Instruments<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><em><br \/>\nPIXImus DEXA<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>The dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, so called DEXA system (Lunar PIXImus, GE Lunar Corp.) in the facility is a desktop portable x-ray scanner that is best for measurement of bone mineral density and body tissue composition on mouse models. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"153\" class=\"image-inline size-medium wp-image-3448 alignright\" title=\"DEXA image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bric\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/843\/2018\/08\/dexa-image-300x153.png\" alt=\"DEXA image\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bric\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/843\/2018\/08\/dexa-image-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/bric\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/843\/2018\/08\/dexa-image.png 423w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The usage of DEXA will eliminate the need for destructive chemical analysis \u2013 a traditional process for body composition measurement that requires days or weeks to complete. DEXA densitometry allows the researcher to conduct longitudinal, high-throughput measurements over the life time of animals for a cost-efficient study.\u00a0 One downside of the system is its low spatial resolution (0.18 x0.18 mm pixel size). With an image area of 80 mm x 65 mm, the PIXImus can image the entire body of most mice and the subcranial region of large obese mice (10-50 g), and portions of rat body for local regional analysis (e.g., spine, leg, or abdominal regions).<\/li>\n<li><em>Accurate measurements<\/em>. The PIXImus provides accurate measurement of bone and tissue for small animals 10-50 g (e.g., mice, lemmings). Measurements on bone, fat and lean tissue exhibit excellent correlation to total their ashed or chemical extraction weights (r=0.99, 0.93, 0.99 respectively) <sup>[1]<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Fast imaging time<\/em>. It provides bone mineral and body composition results from total body imaging in less than 5 minutes.<\/li>\n<li><em>Live animal imaging<\/em>. Mouse is anesthetized by isoflurane gas mixture Low radiation exposure.<\/li>\n<li><em>User-friendly interface<\/em>.
