What to Expect

When you come to the Burn Clinic, please bring the following items:

  • medication that the patient is currently taking, especially pain and itching medication
  • any special garments or splints the patient is supposed to be wearing
  • a list of medicines you need
  • a list of questions you may have

Please plan for dressings to be changed during the clinic visit. This means you will not have to bathe or change the dressings at home on the day of your clinic visit. The Burn Team will want to look at the wounds to see how they are progressing.

If possible, please plan to take your appropriate pain medication close to the time of your appointment or when you check into the clinic. This will give the medication time to be working by the time you get placed in the room and your dressings are removed. If you are the patient and you are taking narcotics for pain relief, please plan to have someone drive you to your appointment.

Please let someone know if you need prescriptions for more medicines or dressing supplies. Clean dressings will be provided in the clinic and a 1-day supply can be given to patients.

While you are at the clinic or in the Burn Center, you can expect to see some or all of the following: physician assistants, medical students, occupational therapists, physical therapists, the rehabilitation counselor, surgeons and/or other members of the Burn Team. The social worker, financial counselor and other professionals are available as needed.

We strive to get patients through the follow-up visit as quickly as possible; however, the entire visit could take hours. So please come prepared to be here for an extended period of time. You might want to bring a snack or money in case you need something to eat while you are here.

Pediatric Patient Information

We recommend that you bring something familiar to your child to play with during the visit, as well as a snack. We want your child to be as comfortable as possible while you are in the clinic. We realize that most children are not fond of medical visits, so whatever you can do to make your child feel safe while visiting our clinic will make the experience more positive for everyone.
