SUMMARY:Race\, Racism\, and Racial Equity (R3) Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The Race\, Racism\, and Racial Equity (R3) Symposium\, hosted by the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion\, is a series of virtual events that brings together scholars and researchers from across campus to share their work with Carolina and the broader community. \nThe second in the R3 series\, “Cultural Industry\, Techno-capitalism\, and Labor: The Mediated Exploitation of Black and Brown Bodies\,” will be held on Wednesday\, Nov. 11\, 1–2:30 p.m. Scholars from across UNC\, including Business and Communications\, will share their work addressing issues of language\, representation\, cultural appropriation\, and decontextualization of Black and Brown labor as it appears through a variety of media.

SUMMARY:Departmental Seminar: Rita L. Strack\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Senior Editor \nNature Methods \nCareer Focus:  Joined Nature Methods in November 2014\, where she handles imaging\, microscopy and probes\, along with protein and RNA biochemistry content.  While studying at the University of Chicago\, she worked with Benjamin Glick and Robert Keenan to engineer improved variants of the red fluorescent protein DsRed\, and studied the chemical mechanism of chromophore formation in DsRed. She continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow in Samie Jaffrey’s laboratory at Weill Cornell Medical College\, where she developed fluorescent reporters for live-cell imaging of RNA such as Spinach2.

SUMMARY:Departmental Seminar: Liqun Luo\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Ann and Bill Seindells Professor\, School of Humanities and Sciences \nStanford University \nResearch Focus:  Dr. Luo is a neuroscientist in the Department of Biology at Stanford University\, where he is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.  He studies the logic of brain wiring using genetic tools.  His lab has developed mosaic marking systems in flies and mice and used them to study how signals are transduced from cell surface receptors to the cytoskeleton\, how neuronal processes are pruned\, and how neural circuits are organized and built.
