{"id":10948,"date":"2020-08-20T11:02:31","date_gmt":"2020-08-20T15:02:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/cellbiophysio\/?post_type=directory&#038;p=10948"},"modified":"2022-02-14T14:43:42","modified_gmt":"2022-02-14T19:43:42","slug":"wolfgang-bergmeier-phd","status":"publish","type":"directory","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/cellbiophysio\/directory\/wolfgang-bergmeier-phd\/","title":{"rendered":"Wolfgang Bergmeier, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><span class=\"tadv-color\"><span style=\"color: #03030f\">Our group employs a multidisciplinary approach <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #03030f\">(biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, immunology, cutting-edge microscopy and animal models)<\/span><\/em><span class=\"tadv-color\"><span style=\"color: #03030f\"> to investigate how <a href=\"http:\/\/bergmeierlab.web.unc.edu\/#stem-cell\">stem cells<\/a> turn into a unique blood cell, the <a href=\"http:\/\/bergmeierlab.web.unc.edu\/#stem-cell\">Platelet<\/a>, and how altered platelet function contributes to human disease. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\"><span class=\"tadv-color\"><span style=\"color: #050505\">Platelets are small anucleate blood cells that are best known for their ability to help us stop bleeding <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #050505\">(hemostasis)<\/span><\/em><span class=\"tadv-color\"><span style=\"color: #050505\">\u00a0when we are injured. Platelets drive the formation of a hemostatic plug through a complex process involving G-protein coupled receptors, calcium-mediated signaling, cytoskeletal remodeling, integrin-mediated adhesion, and apoptosis.
