August 2013 \u2013 The Ruth and Phillip Hettleman Prize recognizes the achievements of outstanding junior tenure-track faculty or recently tenured faculty.<\/p>\n

August 2013 \u2013 Congratulations to Associate Professor Mark Zylka, PhD<\/a>, who will receive the 2013 Ruth and Phillip Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement. Chancellor Carol Folt called the award \u201cone of the University\u2019s most prestigious acknowledgements of faculty excellence\u201d and stated that the selection committee found Zylka\u2019s contributions to research in the areas of pain and neurodevelopmental disorders to be \u201ctruly groundbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zylka is one of four awardees this year, along with Emily Baragwanath in the Department of Classics, Eliana Perrin in the Department of Pediatrics, and Wei You in the Department of Chemistry.<\/p>\n

The prize was established in 1986 through the generosity of Phillip and Ruth Hettleman. Phillip Hettleman (b. June 1899-d. May 1986) was a Goldsboro native and UNC alumnus (class of 1921) who went on to found the New York Stock Exchange firm Hettleman & Co.<\/p>\n

Awardees will be presented with a $5000 cash award at the first Faculty Council meeting on September 13th, 3-5pm in the Pleasants Room at the Wilson Library. Each awardee will also give a lecture during the academic year.<\/p>\n

Dr. Zylka joins an esteemed roster of Hettleman awardees in the department, beginning with Dr. Keith Burridge<\/a> in 1988, Dr. P. Kay Lund<\/a> in 1990, Dr. Richard Cheney<\/a> in 2002, Dr. Cam Patterson in 2003 and Dr. James Bear<\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
