{"id":4430,"date":"2014-01-21T19:50:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-22T00:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/cellbiophysio\/stephanie-gupton-receives-ro1-funding\/"},"modified":"2018-10-17T13:51:06","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T17:51:06","slug":"stephanie-gupton-receives-ro1-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/cellbiophysio\/stephanie-gupton-receives-ro1-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Stephanie Gupton receives R01 funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">Assistant Professor Stephanie Gupton, PhD, receives R01 funding from the National Institutes of Health \u2013 National Institute of General Medical Sciences for her project \u201cTRIM9 coordinates membrane trafficking and cytoskeletal dynamics.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-section\">\n<figure class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium size-full wp-image-4431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/cellbiophysio\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/734\/2018\/06\/stephanie-gupton-receives-ro1-funding-image2.png\" alt=\"image2\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Stephanie Gupton, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>January 2014 \u2013 Congratulations to Assistant Professor Stephanie Gupton, PhD, who will receive her first R01 funding from the <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nigms.nih.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_self\">National Institutes of Health \u2013 National Institute of General Medical Sciences<\/a> for her project \u201cTRIM9 coordinates membrane trafficking and cytoskeletal dynamics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using a combination of mouse genetics, primary cell culture, live cell imaging and neuroanatomical studies, the Gupton lab has found that TRIM9-deficient cortical neurons show misregulated exocytosis and defective actin and microtubule dynamics. Furthermore, cortical neurons devoid of TRIM9 have axon branching defects, are defective in netrin-based axon guidance, and have defective cortical axon fiber tracts in vivo. The goal of this study is to determine the molecular mechanisms by which TRIM9 regulates both cytoskeletal dynamics and vesicle trafficking to elicit axon branching, axon guidance, and neuroanatomical
