Dr. Benjamin Chi, a UNC CFAR Associate Director for the International Core, has successfully renewed his K24 mentoring grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for a second five-year cycle. This NIH K24 award supports the mentorship of early-stage investigators in patient-oriented research, focusing on HIV prevention for pregnant and postpartum women, a critical yet often overlooked area in maternal health and PMTCT programs. Building on ongoing NIH-funded research into HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in southern Africa, the grant will further explore HIV prevention considering various biological, clinical, cultural, and social factors. In his previous grant cycle, Dr. Chi mentored 26 investigators, including 10 NIH K grant recipients, and published 78 articles, with 51 featuring mentees as lead authors.
