This grant will be used to develop a program for medical students to expand equitable access to infectious disease expertise for folks living in North Carolina, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The program will be led by <a href=\"https:\/\/globalhealth.unc.edu\/people\/jessica-lin-md-mscr\/\">Jessica Lin<\/a>, MD, MSCR, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalhealth.unc.edu\/people\/brian-t-bramson-md\/\">Brian Bramson<\/a>, MD, and supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/globalhealth.unc.edu\/people\/sarah-rutstein-md-phd\/\">Sarah Rutstein,<\/a> MD, PhD and <a href=\"https:\/\/globalhealth.unc.edu\/people\/christopher-sellers-md-mph\/\">Christopher Sellers<\/a>, MD, MPH.<\/p>\n<p>The ID STEP program will work to engage medical students early in their education and encourage continued interest through mentoring, hands-on activities, and scholarly projects.<\/p>\n<p>The timeline for the program includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Year 1: Broad Exposure<br \/>\nQuarterly ID-themed mini grand rounds will be aligned with core modules; a \u201cCareers in ID\u201d panel; and integration with the Medical ID Interest Group to bring clinician\u2013educator and research faculty together for high-impact sessions.<\/li>\n<li>Years 1\u20132: ID STEP Cohort<br \/>\nIndividual mentoring plus an\u00a0\u201cID STEP Passport\u201d\u00a0of clinical, quality-improvement, and research activities tailored to each student\u2019s interests;\u00a0pre-program evaluation\u00a0of career objectives; reimbursement of related expenses<\/li>\n<li>Years 1\u20132: ID STEP Scholars<br \/>\nClinical Scholars\u00a0will be able to lead QI projects, case series, or sustained clinical experiences.\u00a0Research Scholars\u00a0can pursue field, lab, or clinical research, and receive project support and conference travel expenses (e.g.,\u00a0IDWeek) when successfully submitting an abstract.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program will leverage\u00a040+ clinical ID faculty\u00a0and\u00a010\u201313 ID fellows\u00a0as mentors and peers as well as connections with\u00a0Wake County Public Health,\u00a0NC State Prisons,\u00a0and AHEC centers.
