Associate Professor Research Summary Paul Hayashi is the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation at UNC. He received formal public health training (MPH from St. Louis University). He is currently involved in clinical research on cirrhosis, transplant outcomes, cirrhosis and drug induced liver injury. Within the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network he serves as co-chair of the causality (diagnosis) committee. The group has published a number of papers on the diagnosis, management and outcomes of drug induced liver injury. He has experience working with several large national datasets including the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)/Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) and the National Inpatient Sample (NIS). He published an important paper that tracked the declining quality of donated livers nationally and the effects of donation after cardiac death. Using the NIS, he was the senior author on the first large population based study documenting improved outcomes for hospitalized patient with cirrhosis Relevance of Research to CGIBD Mission: As Medical Director of Liver Transplant and co-PI for the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network, Dr. Hayashi’s research is directly linked to the overall mission of the CGIBD to reduce the burden of digestive and liver diseases.
