Research Summary
Dr. Zhe Lyu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at NCSU. He is a microbiologist by training with expertise in anaerobic and molecular microbiology, microbial physiology and metabolism, and microbial ecology and evolution. Dr. Lyu’s lab is particularly interested in employing live microbes as model systems to broadly study the physiology and functional roles of oxygen-sensitive microbes linked to gastrointestinal diseases such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and IBD (inflammatory bowel diseases). Current microbes of interest include both archaea such as methane producers (methanogens), and bacteria such as syntrophic hydrogen (syntrophs) and hydrogen sulfide producers (sulfidogens). These microbes specialize in gas production in the gastrointestinal tract thus directly affecting GI physiology and function.
