DESCRIPTION:“Delineating the underlying reasons for the population differences in gastric cancer incidence in the United States” \nMeira Epplein\, PhD \nCo-Leader\, Cancer Risk\, Detection\, and Interception (CRDI) \nDuke Cancer Institute \nProfessor\, Population Health Sciences and Medicine\, \nDuke University School of Medicine \n  \nMeira Epplein is Co-Leader of the Cancer Risk\, Detection\, and Interception Program of the Duke Cancer Institute and Professor of Population Health Sciences and Medicine at Duke University. She is a cancer epidemiologist interested in modifiable risk factors in underserved populations\, with a focus on the association of infection and cancers. She has been PI of five grants from the NCI seeking to further our understanding of the diversity of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori\, and host response to infection\, and the association with gastrointestinal cancers. She is also involved in local initiatives to understand the prevalence of H. pylori in the community and to explore the opportunities for precision prevention of gastric cancer through targeted H. pylori eradication therapy.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Martha S. Johnson is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine\, working under the direction of Dr. Jean Cook and co-mentored by Dr. Scott Magness. Her work in the Cook Lab focuses on understanding how the cell cycle is regulated\, with a particular emphasis on the molecular mechanisms governing cell cycle exit and quiescence. Using live-cell imaging and biosensor-based approaches\, she integrates bioanalytical chemistry\, quantitative imaging\, and molecular and cell biology to study how epithelial cells dynamically balance proliferation and arrest to maintain tissue homeostasis. \n
